Esquire is the new GQ....A Magazine For Today's Man. |
Esquire has gone through a lot of changes over the years that I have been reading it. It went from a old style GQ clone to a magazine that has broadened its writing, reach, and content. Esquire now occupies a unique nitch. You get intelligent, thoughtful commentary on life, music, movies and celebrity, occasionally good fiction, good advice columns, a special but brief look at an extraordinary woman in each issue, and heartfelt stories on real issues that affect men, like an author detailing his battle with cancer. Another big bonus, Esquire is not oversaturated with advertisements, something that GQ is famous for.
Esquire is a magazine that you won't have to hide when the girlfriend comes over, or one that the wife won't object to. Most of all the price is fantastic. Under a dollar an issue, which has to be the best price in town.

The Mens Room |
Esquire magazine covers a wide range of subjects for the modern male in today's America. It's much more sophisticated then other mens fare, like Maxim, Stuff and Playboy--not that there's anything wrong with those publications mind you. Esquire has no problem profiling a beautiful leading lady every now and then, it just does so much less in your face or obvious. I have also found that the stories are much more in depth. It also is a good place to read solid fiction from time to time-from some of today's popular writers. Politics Entertaiment, World Events, Sports and Fashion are all given their due. But at the same time it also has enough room for the fluff stuff as well.
Rcommended read and well worth the cost. |

Better than the competition |
| I use to enjoy Playboy, yet it has devolved into another typical guy mag (i.e. FHM). I gave Esquire a shot given the positive reviews & exceptional price. While it's not bad, on average I have found the magazine mediocre. Some issues are better than others, sometimes there is interesting commentary, interviews, stories, etc. Unfortunately, there seems to be a fair bit of the fluff that you also find in the other mags as well. In addition, much of the writing is generally a bit weak IMHO. Overall it's not bad; although, I gave an extra star for the price. Worth a look for 8$. |
